Bed bugs are the stuff of nightmares for many homeowners. They can creep about your mattress for months before you even know they are there, and they can seem near impossible to eradicate. Plus, no one wants to think about bugs crawling all over them and dining on their flesh while they sleep.

Besides having a good pest control company through the Valley on speed dial, you can protect your home from bed bugs by knowing how to prevent them. Unfortunately, you can unwittingly bring bed bugs into your home if you aren’t careful. Here are the top five ways you can bring bed bugs into your home yourself:

Secondhand Furniture

By now, we hope that everyone is aware enough of the dangers of bed bugs that they don’t buy used mattresses. However, you may be so tempted by the deal that you succumb. Just know that even if you look over the mattress carefully, it is very easy to miss the signs of bed bugs – especially since they burrow deep into the mattress to avoid the light. The best thing you can do to protect your home is to avoid buying used mattresses altogether.

But don’t think you’re safe just buying new mattresses! You can also bring bed bugs in on other secondhand furniture, such as couches and arm chairs. Just buy new and enjoy the peace of mind you get knowing that your home is bed-bug free.

Secondhand Clothes

Bed bugs around Arizona may like to burrow into mattresses and furniture, but don’t forget that the main attraction for them is people. They eat human blood. And they aren’t always good at scurrying off when someone wakes up. Many people end up carrying a hitchhiker or two without knowing it.

Those bugs can easily attach to clothes that the person is wearing and stay on them for a long time. You could even pick up clothing in a thrift store that still has bed bugs on it, and simply washing the garment won’t be enough to get rid of the bed bugs.

Airplanes

Unless you’re fortunate enough to fly first class, you sit in very tight quarters on an airplane. You sit plenty close enough to pick up hitchhiking bed bugs off another person’s clothes, travel pillow, or blanket. Your luggage can also pick up bed bugs from the other luggage in the big pile under the plane.

There’s not much you can do about this except fly first class and use hard cover cases, but you can double check all your clothing and luggage after every time you travel.

Laundromats

Laundromats aren’t as clean as you might think, given their purpose. You can easily pick up bed bugs from other baskets of dirty laundry and even from the washers or dryers themselves. The best thing you can do is wash your clothes at home.

If you don’t have your own washer and dryer, ask a trusted family member or friend to let you borrow theirs.

Public Coat Closet

You go out to a fancy dinner, and you check your coat with the maître d’ so that you don’t have to deal with it thrown clumsily over the back of your chair. You come home with a full belly and a hot case of bed bugs. That fancy dinner ends up costing you a lot more than you bargained for.

Don’t trust that just because you’re at a nice restaurant or hotel that you won’t have a problem with bed bugs. Keep your coat with you.

Bed bugs in Arizona can come from just about anywhere that you will be next to a lot of people or come in contact with fabrics, including the gym, college dorms, and even movie theaters. Awareness will help you keep bed bugs out to some degree, but the pests can still get in your home even with your vigilance. Make sure you know the right pest control company to call when these nasty critters make their presence known.
